Devices and sync

How Cove uses iCloud

Your own private database, with a local-only fallback, and Settings tells you which one opened.

Cove stores your journal in a local database and can sync it through your own private iCloud database. Private means your Apple account, not an Obsidian Ridge Labs server, and we cannot read it.

The fallback chain

  • Private iCloud sync when the container is available.
  • Local-only at the same location when it is not, so the app still opens and nothing is lost.
  • In-memory with a plain-language alert only if the on-disk store is genuinely corrupt.

Cove is still in development, so exact multi-device behaviour will be confirmed and documented before release. Export remains the backup you fully control either way.
